Zoning Out

Your mind may often wander off to another time, location, or situation when reading a book, writing something, in a meeting, or in a class. This condition is known as zoning out. Many people experience this problem when feeling bored or having difficulty focusing on a particular matter.

This condition is a form of dissociation. It may negatively affect your productivity or harm your reputation as a student or worker. Therefore, it is important to know how to stop zoning out and stay focused.

The ‘zoning out’ is regarded as one type of dissociation disorder which is mild. It usually happens when someone is bored or stressed out. It’s considered to be the coping mechanism of the mind. The symptoms of zoning out differ from one person to another.

This condition is experienced by people of all ages – children, adolescents, and adults. Some people start daydreaming when zoned out and some may have difficulty moving after zoning out. Children usually zone out when feeling threatened to protect their minds.

Why are you Zoning out?

1. Sleep Deprivation

You may zone out due to not receiving sufficient sleep for a prolonged period or not sleeping restfully. Chronic sleep deprivation may result from anxiety, depression, or a medical condition. You may notice the symptoms of chronic sleep deprivation if you do not receive eight hours of sleep for days or cannot sleep at night because of work. In this scenario, you feel sleepy throughout the day or have difficulty focusing on your tasks.

2. Feeling Overwhelmed

Your brain may feel overloaded if you are overwhelmed by the emotions. You may zone out in this scenario.

3. Experiencing Trauma

You may start zoning out frequently after experiencing emotional trauma. Your brain may shut itself down and completely detach itself from reality until you are ready to acknowledge and handle the traumatic experience. This type of dissociation may affect the central nervous system. You may temporarily fail to understand who is in control of your emotions or physical movements.

Is Zoning Out a Symptom of Anxiety?

Your mind is preoccupied with your thoughts when zoning out. It may happen due to anxiety or stress. Thus, zoning out is a symptom of anxiety, and people suffering from a social anxiety disorder often space out. If you have this problem, then you will be more focused on others’ perceptions of you instead of paying attention to the work at hand.

People do not just communicate through words. They consciously and subconsciously move different body parts during the conversation. These movements along with the attitude of a person are known as body language. You must pay attention to others’ body language and facial expressions if you want to stop zoning out during conversation.

    2. Use Affirmations

You may motivate yourself using affirmative words if you want to stop zoning out during work or conversation. You may repeat some positive statements in your mind, such as “I feel interested in this conversation” or “I’m a good listener”. Thus, you can keep yourself motivated to focus on the work or conversation.

    3. Take Notes

In some situations, you may take notes to remember what is being said to you. You have to be in the present and have to focus when taking notes. Thus, taking notes may stop you from zoning out.

    4. Use a fidget toy

You benefit from using a fidget toy or fidget jewelry if you zone out when you are not moving. Your mind does not have the opportunity to zone out when playing with a fidget toy or fidget jewelry.

    5. Practice mindfulness

Mindfulness is the practice of being aware of the present moment instead of worrying about the future or dwelling in the past. When you are mindful, you are attentive to the present moment. You can be mindful by –

    • Paying attention to the action of breathing in and breathing out
    • Paying attention to your motor functions and sensory functions
    • Focusing on the sounds or sights in your surroundings
